The Sweater Map: Understanding Body Shape and Sweaters - Kim McBrien Evans

About the Class:
A Sweater Map is a personal schematic that uses your measurements and shape to assist you with sweater fit. Armed with your Sweater Map and a pattern with a schematic, you'll be better able to choose a size or combination of sizes for your next sweater. You'll also have a greater understanding of basic modifications you'll need to make for yourself.

By the end of this class, you will have:

• a body map of yourself
• an understanding of what ease is and how to apply it your sweaters
• a plan for using the sweater map alongside other patterns to create sweaters that fit you well

About the Instructor:
Kim McBrien Evans believes all bodies are good bodies and deserve clothing that fits. Known for designs that turn abstract ideas into colour-filled hand knit reality while simultaneously fitting and honouring every body, Kim aims to revolutionize sweater fit, sizing, and how diverse bodies are represented in the yarn world through research, education, and collaborations with makers worldwide. Her representative body measurement chart for designers—inclusive of 28 - 76” chest sizes—earned her a Top 5 Trailblazer award from Interweave in 2023.

Homework:
Students to fill out their measurement sheet

Required Materials:

• Graph paper (large enough squares for you to count)
• Tape (you may need to tape multiple sheets of graph paper together)
• Ruler and tape measure
• Pencil and eraser
• Pens or markers in at least 2 different colours
• Your measurement sheet (class handout to be sent out prior to the class), filled out
• Optional: if you prefer to work digitally, you may wish to bring a tablet with sketching software that includes graph paper options. I use Graphic on my ipad. Sketchbook is a free app that works with both ipads and android tablets.
