Latvian Mitten Workshop - Lisa Sewell - Fri. 8/8

About the Class:

We'll delve into the world of Latvian mitten construction, techniques, and design in this workshop. These wonderful mittens use a fingering-weight yarn, double point steel needles, and are worked up at 8-10sts/inch on #1, #0, or #00 needles. They wear like iron and get smoother and better with age!
 
Each student will receive a kit with yarn and pattern to construct a child's mitten. I'll cover the elements and techniques used in designing a Latvian mitten. Students will work on a child's sampler mitten as they learn how to make the fringe and braid. I'll cover how the top decreases work and show students how to correctly pick up stitches for the thumb to mirror the hand pattern. 
 
Workshop Materials Include: Instruction Booklet on Latvian mittens, kit of TINES yarn from Latvia, and pattern for the child's mitten we'll start in class.

About the Instructor: Lisa Sewell, a Salt Lake native, has been a passionate knitter and instructor for more than 40 years. A technician a heart, she shares her depth of knitting knowledge and techniques in her classes so her students can flourish in the craft. She created the Rocky Mountain Knitters' Retreat in 2003 to give knitters unstructured time in “slow creation” of their  projects in the company of great food, spectacular views, and like-minded fiber fans.

Required Materials:

• A set of 8" double point steel or metal needle size 2, a magnet board with magnetic ruler
• Highlighter, highlighter tape, or similar
• Optional: A magnet board with magnetic ruler
• Included: This class includes a $25 materials fee to provide the Instruction Booklet, kit of yarn for the project, and pattern
