About this class:
We'll delve into the world of Latvian mitten construction, techniques and design in this workshop. Students will use a finger-weight yarn sourced from Latvia and a set of double-point needles as we work on a set of mini-Latvian mittens. This class is suited for advanced knitters with two-color experience who are comfortable using DPNs working on small (2.75mm/US2) needles.
Students will learn the two-color cast on along with how to make the fringe and braid as we work our way towards the thumb opening. I’ll show how the top decreases and the thumb is completed – including picking up the stitches to mirror the palm-side of the mitten when the thumb is turned down to face the cuff.
Each student will receive a kit to complete the sampler mini-Latvian mittens including: Tines yarn from Latvia, pattern, a set of steel double-point needles (size 2.75mm/US2), DPN case, hanging stitch marker, and handouts on the techniques used in making the mittens. Students should bring a small, curved darning needle, small scissors and a magnet board to follow the charts (optional).
Please note this class is taught in two parts - one session on Friday and one on Saturday.
Level: Intermediate

About the instructor:
I have more than 30 years of teaching experience. I've taught locally at almost every shop in Salt Lake City, at regional knitting retreats and fiber festivals. In 2025 I taught at the Great Basin Fiber Festival in Utah and Flock Fiber Arts Festival in Seattle.
I have a passion for traditional methods and techniques used to make Latvian mittens, Fair Isle and Norwegian sweaters. I enjoy studying the art of knitting and designing workshops that employ the techniques I've learned to help my students flourish in the craft. I've taught Beginning Knitting, Two-Color, Stranded Knitting, Finishing workshops over my career as an instructor. I have also taught multi-day workshops to make Latvian Mittens, Fair Isle and Norwegian sweater classes.
