About this class:
Short rows are one of those techniques that seem mysterious until they click. Then you realize they're everywhere—tailored shoulders, comfortable necklines, or sweaters that don't ride up, just to name a few places. They're deceptively simple, and there are many different ways to do them.
In this class, we'll demystify short rows from the ground up. You'll learn what they are, why knitters use them, and where you'll see them in real patterns. Then we'll get hands-on: we'll swatch four different short-row methods side by side, compare how each one looks and works, and discover which ones feel right in your hands. We'll also cover how to substitute short-row methods when a pattern calls for one technique but you prefer another.
This class is perfect for knitters ready to move past the basics and begin to understand how to shape knitwear beyond increasing or decreasing. No prior short-row experience is needed, and we'll have fun with swatching, discussion, and Q&A throughout our time together. You'll receive pre-class homework by email four weeks before class starts.

Vanessa Smith is a Pacific Northwest-based knitwear designer, teacher, and occasional speaker with a love for texture, thoughtful construction, and small details. She has been designing since 2010 and creates intentional, supportive patterns and video tutorials to help knitters learn new skills, build confidence, and feel proud of their work.
