Friday, July 31

About this class:
Natural Dyeing is more than simply extracting pigment from plants and other dyestuffs. And it is also simply extracting pigment from plants and other dyestuffs! Learn about the world of natural dyeing -- from thorough preparation to foraging and gardening to use and care of your dyed goods.
This class takes time to cover the basics of dyeing and dye stuffs, but also explores modifiers and make discoveries beyond the curriculum. You will learn, through classroom experience, how to make numerous variations in your future of dyeing.
Tammy White is a farmer and dyer from Wing & A Prayer Farm in Vermont where she tends to over 100+ sheep and other livestock and 20 acres of fields and gardens. Her experience in sustainable fiber farming and intentional breeding informs her Natural Dye practice which supplies color to her flocks' wool. You will go home with wool yarn from her farm which you can use in small projects in addition to a sampling of cellulose and protein fibers.
Wear a smock or apron and bring gloves to keep your clothing and hands clean. And plan on bringing a waterproof container/bag to hold wet materials in case your dyed items are not dry when you leave.
Level: Intermediate
What you’ll need to bring to class:
gloves, apron or smock, waterproof container or bag to take home wet yarn/fibers
About the instructor:
I have been teaching Natural Dyeing classes virtually, and in person, nationally and internationally, since 2010. My workshops focus on sustainable resource management and practical application, leaning in to foraged materials and low-to-zero waste craft. As a farmer and gardener, I share my expertise in the best practices for raising natural dye materials in a variety of circumstances to enable and encourage dyers to grow their own dyestuffs. My classes range from 10 - 30 students and I insure that they all go home with pdfs or workbooks, resource lists, and their dye materials. In some cases, students go home with dyestuffs and seeds as well. I teach basic preparation through variations on techniques to yield results that are atypical to natural dyeing so that there is a thorough sense of the use of natural dyes. I love teaching and sharing about my experiences and enabling dyers to explore the world of natural dyeing as unlimited. I often share about the work on my farm and how my natural dyeing is integrated with my flocks' life and production.
Please note - Marketplace tickets are not included in the class price and will need to be purchased separately.
In order to allow our instructors to prepare for their classes, we are not able to refund class purchases if your plans change. However, we are happy to transfer them if you find someone to take your place!
