About the Class:

This workshop is designed to introduce knitters to the unique techniques and fiber choices that make summer knitting both stylish and functional. Participants will gain an understanding of warm-weather yarns, such as linen, silk, and cotton, and how their properties influence the drape, texture, and durability of knitted garments. Through hands-on practice, attendees will learn key decorative techniques featured in Island Vibes: Summer Knits, including modular knitting, intarsia, and lateral braids.

By the end of the session, participants will have the confidence to select and begin a summer-friendly knitting project and will walk away inspired and equipped to embrace the beauty of summer knitting.

Island vibes features nine patterns for summer knits: three tops, a cardigan, a shawl, a dress, a skirt, a sarong and a bag. This versatile capsule collection is designed mostly with linen, silk and cotton yarns that are perfect for warm weather. Decorative elements and techniques such as fringes, modular knitting and intarsia, are used in a modern and vibrant way. 

Techniques covered:

- Mesh pattern - Meera and Nutsfield
- Linen bag - Calabash
- Mesh/Cable - Ria skirt
- Lateral braid - Grassroots Tee
- Intarsia - Disentangle

About the Instructor: Sasha Hyre is a Montreal-based knitwear designer and teacher. She is known for her versatile designs that combine colours and textures, and her work has been featured in several knitting magazines and books. Island Vibes is not only a celebration of her Jamaican heritage but also a tribute to the meditative and relaxing power of knitting.

Skill Level: Intermediate; students should be comfortable with knitting and purling. Experience knitting with multiple skeins, as well as basic increases and decreases, is beneficial.

Homework: It would be helpful for students to be familiar with the patterns from the book, Island Vibes: Summer Knits by Sasha Hyre

Required Materials:

• Yarn for any of the projects included in the Island Vibes book
• Sasha will bring samples of the yarn used in the book, but for display purposes only (not for sale). However, there will also be a link provided to students to preorder a kit of samplers of the yarns she used in order to make a mini project.
