About the Class:

If you’ve ever wanted to spin a large quantity of yarn for a garment or larger accessory and have been stuck with no idea of how to start, you’re in the right place. This class will begin with a discussion about yarn construction and fabric drape and density, take you through my sampling process from start to finish, and then transition to a talk about grist, micron count and wool characteristics, as well as how to choose how much fiber to buy for a project. Finally, I’ll have several samples and knit swatches to share to begin some dialogue about fabric construction and what helps the fiber shine.

The intention of this class is to begin the work of demystifying sweater spinning by sharing the entire sampling process from start to finish!

About the Instructor: Tazhiana Gordon is a maker through and through. They first encountered knitting as a teenager and then came back to fiber craft in 2020 and haven’t looked back since. After adding a spinning wheel and then another and then a drum carder and then another, their approach to making has evolved to one that looks like working from the ground up and following the rabbit hole as far as it goes. There is fleece in every corner, a dozen or so spinning projects on the various wheels and espinners, thousands of yards of handspun in baskets and on shelves and project bags in a pile yet they are always daydreaming of what they can make and learn next. They live in NYC with their husband and their two cats and split their time between a myriad of other hobbies, nursing, and roaming the wilds of the concrete jungle.

Skill Level: Intermediate; this is not an introduction to spinning class so students should be able to spin and ply yarn that they would then be comfortable knitting with.

Homework: None

Required Materials:

  • Optional: Students are encouraged to bring examples of their handspun yarn for discussion
